Olosunde EFL Suspension League One Rotherham

Matt Olosunde put in his latest stellar display against Everton in the FA Cup. The right-back is on track to become the club’s most prized asset…

The full-back left Rotherham United fans gushing once again at the weekend. The Millers travelled to Goodison Park to face Premier League high flyers Everton.

Most went into this game with little expectation. But Paul Warne’s side were fantastic as they were the better side for large portions of the game.

A lot of their success came as a result of Olosunde’s performance. Despite him playing against former Barcelona and PSG defender Lucas Digne, Rotherham’s wing-back had a lot of joy on Saturday.

The young American caused Digne and his Toffees teammates all sorts of problems. Most of Rotherham’s success in attacking areas came from Olosunde’s marauding runs up the pitch.

He has come on leaps and bounds as a player since he joined Rotherham in July 2019. The right-back had his best game as a Miller to date against Everton.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were not at their best. But as bad as they were, Rotherham were equally as brilliant and that was headed up by the showing of Olosunde.

It has not been all plain sailing for the defender this season. He started the campaign out of the team as a result of injury and the superb performances of Wes Harding.

But since Olosunde found his way back into the starting XI, he has not looked back. His game has moved to the next level since Rotherham started to use a 3-5-2 set-up.

This allows Olosunde to operate as a wing-back, which helps him to show off his quality going forward. He really is a top athlete and his fearless attacking runs are always going to cause problems for opponents.

Most players that are in the same bracket as Olosunde are not as good defensively as they are going forward. Yet the 22-year-old has shown time and time again that when called upon he is a very reliable defender.

He has proved himself to be a true modern-day full-back. Pace, power, athleticism and maturity in defence – he has it all.

When he’s at full tilt, he is a nightmare to deal with. He was a leading contender for player of the year last season, and he is well on his way to be a prime candidate for the award at the end of this campaign as well.

His career-defining showing against Ancelotti’s side was made even better as he scored his first-ever senior goal to equalise for the Millers.

Wing-backs do not always get the recognition that they deserve when playing well. But it is good that Olosunde is getting the plaudits that his form warrants.

As Rotherham hope to avoid the drop, the defender is going to be vital. More often than not, he is the chief creator down the flanks with his runs and crosses.

His non-stop work also helps him to hold up his end of the bargain in defensive areas. For a team in Rotherham’s position, this is always important.

It is clear that Warne and his staff have done a great job nurturing Olosunde over the past year-and-a-half. He was a raw talent when he first signed, but now he is getting better with each game that goes by.

Just like they did with Will Vaulks and Semi Ajayi, Warne and co seem to be prepping Olosunde for an eventual move to a bigger club.

He is still young and going off his performances this season, it will only be a matter of time before one of the division’s big hitters swoop to try to sign him.

Given the nature of the game at the moment, Olosunde is the type of player that anyone in the Championship would love to have.

He offers so much to his team, which makes him a really valuable asset to the Millers. Warne has done a great job since taking over. One of his best achievements has been how he and his staff have helped move their player’s game to the next level.

Warne will no doubt take a lot of pride in seeing Ajayi in the Premier League and Vaulks at Cardiff. This offers him vindication that the club are doing the right things behind the scenes to develop their players.

Rotherham have a few candidates who could be set for big-money moves away. Yet Olosunde is currently right at the top of this list as his game continues to improve with the more experience that he builds up.

He is clearly loving his football at the moment, and this is being lapped up by the Millers faithful.

If he can help fire the club to safety, his stock will go through the roof. It will be a shame to see him leave down the line, but he can certainly go onto achieve a lot in the game.

After signing on a free transfer, Olosunde could well depart in the next year or so for a million-plus. This is superb business from the club. It sums up what this current regime are doing right on and off the pitch.

He is a special talent, and Rotherham are lucky to have him. The Matt Olosunde Fan Club is continuing to grow and rightly so. If he can continue to shine while helping the Millers stay in the Championship, he will surely become one of Rotherham’s biggest fan favourites in recent times.
